Summary:

The main purpose of this study is to determine the effect of patient-administered abdominal massage on time to resolution of small bowel obstruction (time to passage of flatus).

Trial Description

OUTCOMES: Time from hospital admission to 1st episode of passing flatus
PRIMARY OBJECTIVES:

  • To determine the effect of patient-administered abdominal massage on time to resolution of small bowel obstruction (time to passage of flatus).
This is a single centre pilot study at Kingston General Hospital. Participants will undergo 1:1 randomization to intervention or non-intervention groups. Intervention includes abdominal massage: repeated manual manipulation of patient’s abdomen administered by either patient or health-care professional.
